Florida Farm Commodities Citrus Juice |
 |
Florida juice processors used the record crop of 244 million boxes of oranges to produce a record of more than 1.4 billion gallons of single-strength equivalent orange juice in 1997-98. It was an increase of 7.28 percent over the previous season.
The record OJ production more than off set declines in grapefruit and tangerine production on the way to the record 1.6 billion gallons of citrus juice, an increase of 4.6 percent. The production of grapefruit juice fell 15 percent, and tangerine production declined a whopping 30 percent.
Processors turned 96.5 percent of the record orange crop into juice. They used only 56.1 percent of the grapefruit crop and only 17.8 percent of the tangerine crop.
They also produced more than 1.1 million tons citrus pulp for livestock feed, and more than 28 thousand tons of molasses and more than 34 million pounds of citrus flavoring for blended drinks.

Citrus Juice Facts
- Scientists at the Florida Department of Citrus invented frozen concentrated orange juice in 1945. In 1948, the department gave the patent for the process to the U.S. Government, helping to make the entire frozen concentrate industry commercially viable.
- Brazil, Florida and Mexico (in that order) are the worlds top three producers of orange juice.
- More than 96 percent of all the oranges grown in Florida in 1996-97 were processed into orange juice. Florida produced more than one billion gallons of single strength equivalent orange juice.
