Florida Farm Commodities Poultry |
|
Increased average weight and prices pushed Floridas broiler crop to a record value of $252.8 million in 1998, while prices cut the value of the states egg production to its lowest level in three years at $112.7 million.
Prices for broilers average 40.0 cents a pound, highest ever; and Florida farmers increased the average weight of a live bird to 4.9 pounds, a record, and up from 4.5 pounds a bird the previous season. Production reached a record of more than 632 million pounds, but farmers sold 3.4 million less birds with sales of a few more than 129 million, the lowest number sent to market in the last five years.
Average egg prices fell almost four cents a dozen to force the value down, despite an increase in production from the states largest laying flock in seven seasons.
Hillsborough County leads the state in egg production and Suwanee is the leading broiler producing county.
