Certified Florida Farm Wineries and Vineyards
Wineries and Vineyards
When Spanish explorers came to Florida 400 years ago they found native grapevines. Using Old World traditions, they converted the muscadine into the first American wine.
Since that time, Florida researchers have created a wider variety of wine grapes that flourish in the state's subtropical climate and are well-suited to its soils.
Florida wineries and vineyards are scattered throughout the state, with harvest times ranging from May to September.
Visitors can stroll through a vineyard, view a harvest, the winemaking, corking, bottling and labeling processes, and sample varieties of delicious Florida wines.
Under the Florida Farm Winery Program, which is administered by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS), a Florida winery may qualify as a tourist attraction only if it is registered with and certified in writing by the FDACS as a Florida Farm Winery. This certification status must be re-examined by FDACS on a yearly basis.
To qualify as a Florida Farm Winery, the winery must:
-- Produce and sell less than 250,000 gallons of wine annually of which 60 percent of the wine produced is made from state agricultural products.
-- Maintain an operating vineyard with a minimum of 5 owned or managed land in Florida which produces commodities used in the production of wine.
-- Be open to the public for tours, tastings and sales at least 30 hours each week.
-- Apply annually to FDACS for recognition as a Florida Farm Winery.
-- Pay an annual application and registration fee of $100.
