Steps 1 -2 Steps 3 - 4 Steps 5 - 7
1. Background of ocean: Using the angular brush loaded with Hauser Green Dark, Titanium White and a touch of Burnt Carmine top off the edges of the background waves.
2. Ocean: Layout the background of ocean with Blue. Use a mixture of Green, Blue, Carmine and White on the angular brush. Blend in the area just below the color just painted along the horizon line. a touch of Yellow Light is then blended into the right hand corner for the beach.
3. Highlight the background waves using the angular brush turned on its horizontal side with a touch of Titanium White and Yellow Light
4. Small waves/beach: Using the angular brush loaded with Titanium White, create the leading edge of the small waves on the beach.
5. Sky (lower area): Color is a mixture of Magenta, Yellow Light and Titanium White brushed across the sky using the angular brush.
6. Sky (middle area):
Color is a mixture of Brilliant Blue and Titanium white loaded on the angular brush.
7. Sky (upper area): Color is a mixture of Titanium White and Magenta. Blend across the sky using diagonal angular strokes on the border lines between colors, creating a smooth transition form color to color.
Steps 8 - 10 Steps 11 - 15 Steps 16 - 17
8. Clouds: Lower clouds on the horizon are created using the angular brush and Brilliant Blue, Magenta and Titanium White. Blend in above the horizon.
9. Upper clouds: The highest clouds in the painting are created with the same colors as the horizon clouds.
10. Soften upper clouds: Brush Magenta and Yellow Light across the upper portion of the sky. Create a second cloud. Add a small amount of water to the brush and blend softly.
11. Large curled wave: Form the wave using the fan brush and Titanium White as shown.
12. Pull Titanium White "down" into the water using the fan brush to create the turn of the wave.
13. Add Aqua to the smaller ocean waves in the background behind the large curled wave in the foreground.
14. Underside of the large wave: Highlight the underside of the wave using the angular brush loaded with Titanium White and Aqua.
15. Underneath the smaller waves: Show contrast in the shaded area of waves along the edge (under the white water line) with the angular brush using Burnt Carmine and Brilliant Blue together.
16. Wave curl: Load the fan brush with Brilliant Blue and a touch of Aqua. Bring the color "up" from the turn of the large wave to the top of the curled edge with the fan brush (add water to soften the color.)
17. Foamy waves: Using the fan brush and Titanium White stipple a foamy line to the waves. Pull down with the fan brush loaded with Titanium White on the beach area to create a reflective shoreline.
Steps 18 - 19 Steps 20 - 21 Steps 22 - 23
18. Highlight sky and clouds with Titanium White and Yellow Light using the angular brush. Touch up the lower left hand cloud with highlights.
19. Palm tree: Add the basic trunk outline with the angular brush and an inky mixture of Burnt Carmine and Brilliant Blue, created by adding water to mixture.
20. Palm tree: Shape the fronds of the palm tree using the fan brush loaded with mixture of Yellow Light and a touch of Hauser Green Dark.
21. Tree trunk highlights: Highlights are created using the angular brush loaded with Titanium White, Yellow Ochre and Magenta and placed on the right side of the tree trunk. Sand dune: Use the fan brush and a mixture of Burnt Carmine, Hauser Green Dark, Brilliant Blue and Titanium White to lay in the sand dune area.
22. Highlights for the palm fronds are created using the fan brush loaded with Titanium White, Aqua and Yellow Light. For the sand dune highlights load the fan brush with touches of Titanium White, Yellow Light and Yellow Ochre. Stipple the grassy highlights on the sand dune.
23. Highlights on this side of the foreground fronds are achieved by loading the fan brush with Titanium White, Brilliant Blue and a touch of Magenta and Aqua.
