Strawberries
History and Facts: The strawberry was born in North and South America, travelled to Europe and finally returned in a very different form. In the United States, the commercial development of strawberries has come principally since the Civil War and most strawberry varieties now grown have originated within the past 55 years.
Nutritional Value:
A cup of strawberries provides about 50 percent more than the daily recommended allowance of vitamin C. They are low in sodium. One cup of whole berries has only 55 calories, and is a good source of dietary fiber.
Storage:
Five to seven days is the general rule for maintaining fresh strawberries at their quality peak. They are seldom kept longer and their temperature must be below 40 degrees fahrenheit; 32 degrees is considered best. Relative humidity should be kept between 90 and 95 percent.
