Florida remains the leading dairy state in the Southeast, producing 288 million gallons of milk in 1997.

Florida ranks 13th nationally in cash receipts for milk, 16th nationally in milk production, and 14th in the number of dairy cows.

Okeechobee remains the major milk-producing county in Florida with 22 dairies and 36,000 cows that produced 64 million gallons of milk in 1997.

Three Florida counties (Okeechobee, Lafayette and Gilchrist) combined to produce more than 100 million gallons of milk, and accounted for 39 percent of the states 1997 production.
